In the process of supporting children during this pandemic, We have observed that children are continuing to learn even in this situation. Children have adapted to this mode of digital learning and have progressed well. Parents, teachers, and children are making a better team effort like never before. Parents are trying to understand how the Montessori system of education works, believing and experiencing how Montessori works wonders for children!
It has been a long learning journey. The only way to reach out to children was digital. It was new to Montessori guides/teachers. We were sceptical of its workability but our sole intention was to keep being connected with children and spend quality time with them. With time we realized that we could do more than just being connected.
This mode of learning had its limitations but we found a way to work around it. We had to keep in mind the screen time for children, how to present activities with the limited time, and interestingly adapt each activity since children are unable to access the Montessori material; they are unable to touch the material. Learning had to happen only by listening and seeing. We repeated the activities so children can go back and forth practicing the previously presented activities. Learning is moving slowly and steadily. We had to find ways to keep it interactive where children would also learn from their peers, and be motivated.
We shared ways to create simple but effective do-it-yourself material at home so that children could work on hands-on experience. These materials were created in a way the Montessori principles of learning were preserved. Parents and teachers shared the responsibility of creating material for children. Children worked on material created for the decimal system, bow frame, lacing frame, movable alphabets, number rods, spindle boxes, stamp game, constructive triangle, and many more. Parents have been co-operative and supportive in this journey.
